To be fair, you can make some of the most un-Dorkaish lists with a perfect comp score. (Brad and I worked on a brutal Coteaz list that had a perfect score except for the Special Character ding... and now that ding is removed! This list would have steamrolled and been little fun to play against).

While this may be a discussion for another place, I think 6th has really screwed standardized comp systems like Da Boyz have. Between allies, the new codexes providing all around solid options, and the 6th ruleset hurting competitive mentalities (with random effects etc), I think the comp systems can almost be restricting...

Regardless yay for Jack! And yay for Dylan!

I do agree that for most of us it is easy to get a good comp score with our system. However those that refuse to vary units up and feel they just have to take 2-3 squads of Long Fangs or 2 Hive Guard are struggling and that was kind of the intent (to get varied lists). Overall I have been very impressed with the lists I've gotten and this should be a GREAT day of 40K. Even some of the guys I expected would submit SPAM actually worked with me via email and altered their redundant lists up for a perfect (or damn near it) comp score.
No doubt allies makes it tougher to deal with but allies by nature makes a more varied army (read less SPAM).

I had 2 lists that scored a 20 and were rejected. One of those returned a perfect 80 and the other came back with a 40. So the guy with the 40 is pretty much out of the running for all prizes and honestly I don't see his list even getting 'Best General'. To each his own or as I like to say "Some peoples kids".

I agree with you mike. I read through the comp rules and I was floored. Now I have not played in a tournament in like 10 years.

But do balanced lists not work anymore? Is it also a problem that everyone is playing the same armies? (Ie 75% marine mech at a tourney)

The each codex is so different and some manipulate the FOC that there are so many combos. How do they know that the rules they came up with penalizes one cheesy codex list and not another.

I don't know what other people think but restrictions to me doesn't make the game more fun. But increasing the option available to players a better way. Allow the 40k forgeworld stuff. Not apocalypse but 40k stuff.

We've had this conversation internally before and we'll probably have it again... I'd say move further discussion of this over to the 40k forum so as not to ruin the announcements thread...

The comp system Standish is using is an attempt to remove MSU (multi small unit) cheese lists, among other things, from the tournament scene. Yes, doing this also kills other lists as an unintended side effect. (KOS Orks come to mind) However they're attempting to adapt it so that those fun and balanced outliers don't get clipped along with the undesired stuff.

Remember... what's balanced in normal play is not necessarily balanced in competitive play.

What a fun and well-run tournament! Jack, Dylan, Mike and I all made the trek up into the northern wilderness, and had a great day of gaming at Crossroads.

The tables/terrain were very impressive:

The day also offered some slick-looking armies:

Mike's Necron-thullu force looked fierce:

(Would've gotten my vote. Seriously)

as did Dylan's way-back marines/guard detachment

In this company, I was honored to eke out the army award.

The tournament was very smoothly run. The composition rubric definitely shaped the tone. I had three very fun games, hard-fought but good-spirited.

Thanks Steve and company. Thanks Crossroads Games. It was an entirely worthwhile experience. We'll be back!

And I was proud to see DorkaMorka earning the top three army votes, with razor-thin points between us! Well done, boys.
